Music by Jerry Bock
I’ve had the incomparable thrill of traveling all over the world to attend many glamorous premieres of the film Fiddler on the Roof. But perhaps the most unique happened in February 2003, when I was asked to host the debut of The Sing-Along Fiddler on the Roof on the final night of The Seattle Jewish Film Festival. As with the popular The Sing-Along The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz, members of the audience—of all ages and backgrounds— came dressed as their favorite characters from the film. After the intermission, before Act Two of the film began, I entertained them with this song, asking them to join in on the final line of each chorus. What an experience it was, seeing all those folks dressed in shtetl wear or as bottle dancers and wearing babushkas over their jeans, chime in with “We’re still here!” Austin Pendleton, the original stage Motel, warmly remembers when this song was still in the show.
